The career I chose to focus on is a Pediatrician. A pediatrician is a medical doctor who cares for young people from newborns to teenagers. They are very patient, compassionate, and have a love for children. Their job is to conduct physical exams to diagnose diseases and injuries and recommend medical surgery or rehabilitation. Pediatricians may work in hospitals, health clinics, government agencies, or they may be self-employed with their own private practice offices. Their work schedule is very busy as they work 9-12 hours a day. Income can range from 100,000 to over 300,000 depending on how much experience they have. Canada has a national shortage in specialist physicians so the chances on finding employment are good. To become a physician you will need 2-3 years of an undergraduate university education including the completion of several key science courses. Then you will need to attend medical school and earn a MD which would take 4-5 years. After that you have to complete a pediatric residency which can last for 3-4 years.
I’m interested in this career because I’ve always wanted to be some type of doctor. Science is my favorite subject so I would be interesting in spending many years studying that area. I think that being a pediatrician would suit me because I absolutely love children. I want a job where I can help people and this job allows me to do that. I believe that I would be very compassionate about it if it was my job. I’m also very patient, friendly, caring, and can communicate well with others. I am also very good at giving advice and listening to others problems so I would be able to help them through difficult times and problems.
I have to admit that the thought of having to go to school for so many years discourages me a bit. However I know I have the determination and perseverance to work my way through it. I can see myself going to university after high school and starting the process of getting all the education I need to become a pediatrician. At the same time I can see myself balancing my personal life with my education. Doing some of the things I’ve always wanted to do when I got older and meeting new people along the way.
